Message from our Chair,
Gary Shea
For our May 15 at the Sheet Metal Workers Local 80 meeting, we need a substitute Secretary to take the minutes. Especially if you have some experience taking minutes, please send a note to me at demsofsoc@gmail.com.
The May meeting should be a good one - our County Commissioner Charlie Cavell will speak on the Fund MI Future program. See more info at fundmifuture.org.
I will also present a budget for the club for 2025 and 2026. It will be an ambitious budget that should help us grow our membership and enable us to successfully support Democrats in the crucial 2026 elections.
Besides the resistance actions on our Take Action page on the website, we have some events coming up, which are also on the Events page and the calendar:
June 14 - volunteer opportunity at Forgotten Harvest, 9 a.m. to noon, 15000 W. 8 Mile, Oak Park, west of Coolidge on the North side of 8 Mile.
June 19 - The Oak Park Juneteenth celebration will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Oak Park High School at Oak Park Blvd and Coolidge. We will have a booth and need some volunteers to staff it. The Huntington Woods Juneteenth celebration will take place in the Rec Center parking lot from 6-8 p.m. (Note that due to the conflict with Juneteenth, we will not have a club meeting in June.)
June 22 - Berkley Pride event - 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. off 12 Mile between Robina and Griffith. We will have a booth and need some volunteers to staff the booth, including setting up and tearing down.
July 13 - DSOC-sponsored art show - “Resistance Works” - at Articipate Gallery in Berkley. Private opening for Dems of SOC and friends, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. There is a $10 donation.
July 21 - Red Cross blood drive - 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Oak Park Community Center. Volunteers are needed for the check-in desk.
August 21 - DSOC Club picnic at Bacon Park in Berkley from 4-8 p.m. Volunteers are needed. The park has a kids’ playground, a shelter and a port-a-potty. The location is Webster and Bacon in Berkley.
To volunteer for any of these events, please send an email to demsofsoc@gmail.com.
DSOC merch. Hoodies, sweatshirts, T-shirts, totes and hats are available in our online Store. Since we do not require payment of dues to join our club, the sale of our merchandise is one of our primary fundraising tools. Wearing DSOC merch not only shows you are a proud Democrat; it also promotes our club. These items also make great gifts!
