Message from our Chair,
Gary Shea

Summer is passing quickly, so let’s have a picnic! Our annual picnic happens on August 21 at Bacon Park in Berkley (Bacon and Webster) from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. There will be food, socializing and plenty of candidates for ’25 and ’26 who will meet-and-greet and speak.

Please RSVP here, from the Events page of this site or by using the QR code above to go directly to ActBlue so we can plan for the appropriate number of attendees. A $15 donation helps cover the food and venue costs.

At our meetings over the next few months, we will look closely at the many petitions that may be on the 2026 ballot; some are ready, or soon will be ready, to collect signatures. Some of the petitions support our democratic values; some very scary ones don’t.

Also, we want to encourage good people to consider running for office. There isn’t much glory or money to come from serving on a local city council or school board, and it can be a lot of work and responsibility, but these roles are essential to building a society that works for all of us. Come to the picnic or our meetings and talk to people who have run for office. We can also direct you to some helpful resources.

We will also meet and hear from candidates for both the upcoming 2025 local elections and next year’s state and federal offices. On the national front, we will elect a new senator and representative to the U.S. House. As far as statewide offices, we will elect a new governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and secretary of state. We will also elect a new state senator and new state House representatives.

Finally, some good news: the Resistance Works Art Show was a big success. We had good attendance, and we made some money to support our efforts to elect good people.

Hope to see you at the picnic, at meetings and at a protest!

DSOC merch. Hoodies, sweatshirts, T-shirts, totes and hats are available in our online Store. Since we do not require payment of dues to join our club, the sale of our merchandise is one of our primary fundraising tools. Wearing DSOC merch not only shows you are a proud Democrat; it also promotes our club. These items also make great gifts!
